The Partition is designed to retain close to half of its weight no matter what it hits and to plow through heavy muscle and bone. The Accubond is designed more for pennetration on thin skined game and if it hits heavy bone will possibly blow up and shread apart. As you can see, the table below comparing the 130gr Nosler AccuBond (.435 BC) in .270 Winchester to 150gr Nosler Partition (.387 BC), 165gr Nosler AccuBond (.475 BC), and 180gr Nosler AccuBond (.507 BC) loads in .30-06 Springfield, there is a significant difference in the bullet trajectories between the two cartridges.
They list the 30-06 with the same bullet with a maximum velocity of 2800fps. In the Nosler manual the top listed velocity for the 300 Win Mag with a 180gr bullet is 3160, better than Hornady. The 30-06 gets 2872fps, also better but 288fps below the 300 Win Mag.
I normally use Federal 180 grain Nosler Partition in 30-06 for elk hunts with great performance. My brother was using Blackhills Nosler Accubonds the last couple years in his 30-06. In my opinion, they perform very similar. Both are accurate in my bolt rifle, a Tikka T3 lite, with the accubond being a little more accurate. I used the 165g Accubond (Nosler Factory loading 30-06 @ 2800 fps) on my elk this year. Terminal performance is supposed to be very similar to the 165 Partition. Quartering towards, hit just ahead of shoulder and exited behind offside shoulder. Took out both lungs and the area above the heart with all the arteries for a DRT one shot kill. The .30-06 does not face the capacity limitations of the smaller .308 and thus is more powerful and better suited for hunting and with careful loading much superior as a long range target load. 165-168, bullets can be driven 100 - 200 fps faster using large amounts of IMR 4350 or H4350 powder than the .308 but safely within established loads. For elk, the 180 grain .30 caliber Core-Lokt would be a much more appropriate choice. Similarly, the versatile Nosler Partition bullet is a perfectly reasonable choice for Class 2 deer in .257 Roberts, for Class 3 elk in 7mm Magnum and for Class 4 bison in .416 Rigby.
Feb 13, 2006 · In .30-06 I use the Federal Premium High Energy with the Nosler Partition bullet for elk. I keep hoping Federal or Winchester will make a high energy load for the Nosler Accubond bullet, that would bring the '06 up into magnum performance levels yet retain the outstanding accuracy needed for longer range shots. Winchester Accubond 270 Wsm Dec 31, 2013 · I sure the Accubond was designed to expand to a larger cross section than the partition, causing more internal damage and the partition expands less and penetrates considerably better. I wouldn't be too concerned about using either on an elk hunt with a 220 gr. 30-06 or a 250 gr. 338 Win.
The G1 ballistic coefficients of the trio are .474 for the Partition, .500 for the Trophy Bonded Tip and .507 for the AccuBond. Two Sierra .30-caliber 180-grain bullets: the flat-based ProHunter and the boattail GameKing. The author has used the pair for decades, and finds the ProHunter to be the tougher of the two. The AccuBond is more streamlined (higher BC) than a Partition of the same weight, so it shoots a hair flatter, and the accuracy of the Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet on which it is based is legendary. So for me, picking between the AccuBond and the SST is a no-brainer considering your pronghorn-to-elk application. If you really want to stay with Nosler, Double Tap sells a 200 grain Accubond load for the 30-06. Nosler's web site will give you the scoop on the Accubond's performance in comparison to the Partition. A 30-06 Springfield has more like 25 foot pounds recoil energy. To my knowledge the Garand autoloading service rifle shoots a 30-06 Springfield, which shoots a .308-inch diameter bullet. The 308 Winchester cartridge is a shortened version of the 30-06 that can only be fired in a rifle chambered for 308 Winchester.
